Iron Infusions

Iron Infusions can be a very quick and effective way to treat low iron and the symptoms it causes such as persistent tiredness and lethargy.

We perform these infusions, and aclasta infusions, for approved patients Monday – Friday.

We also welcome referrals from GPs or specialists outside our practice.

Before your Appointment

Low iron must be clinically indicated through a blood test and an infusion medically approved as the treatment before we can perform the procedure at our practice.

We encourage our patients to have regular check ups and iron is typically checked as part of an annual blood test.

We welcome patients from other medical practices for this procedure, but you must ask your doctor to provide us with:

  • A copy of the blood tests showing your iron levels
  • A health summary, including your regular medications and any ongoing medical conditions
  • A letter to request the infusion, including any important medical context we should know about you
  • A prescription for the iron which is to be collected by you at your preferred pharmacy and brought to your appointment

Booking Your Appointment

Straight-forward iron infusions will take 45 mins – 1 hour.

You will be supervised by our practice nurse for the duration of the infusion. A doctor will check your vital signs and the infusion setup before the infusion is commenced.

It will take anywhere from 30mins – 1 hour for a typical patient to receive the iron. We will then observe you post-infusion for 15 minutes to ensure there are no adverse reactions before discharging you.

Fees

There are 2 costs associated with the iron infusion and both will be privately billed.

  1. Treatment room fee (no Medicare rebate) – $120
  2. Doctor Attendance, time-based (with Medicare rebate) – approx. $65 out of pocket

The upfront cost, before any rebates, will be somewhere between $200 and $350 depending on the procedure’s complexity given your individual risk factors.

Your total out-of-pocket will be approximately $150 for pensioners, and $200 for all other patients.
