When to seek medical attention for COVID-19

Most COVID-19 positive people will be able to successfully manage their illness at home by following the tips below.

Many people experience some symptoms from COVID-19. The following symptoms are common and should subside in 2-7 days. They should be managed with rest, drinking plenty of water, throat lozenges, and taking paracetamol/ibuprofen as directed on the packet.

Common Symptoms:

 

  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Fatigue

Some severe symptoms will require immediate medical attention. If any of these symptoms arise, call Triple Zero (000) or go to your nearest emergency department immediately. Call the hospital ahead of your arrival and tell the operator that you have tested positive for COVID-19 so that they can plan for your safe arrival. Do not attend a general practice or other health facility.

Severe Symptoms:

  • Severe dizziness
  • Drowsy or confused
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pressure or pain lasting more than 10 minutes
  • Unable to stand
